Lazarus Code A First Family Saga eBook Sharon Van Orman

Lazarus Code is a marriage of sci-fi and horror. Does this union work? In one word, absolutely!

I’ve read some sci-fi books, I’ve read a few zombie apocalypse books. I’ve never read one that’s both. From the very beginning I was hooked. Ryder waking from a prolonged sleep after her exploration ship arrives back to Earth after being away for years, to the switches in points of view as the virus is unleashed on the world and the dead begin to walk again. The smoothness Sharon Van Orman blends the hard science and the fantastical story is really compelling.

There are a lot of very well written action scenes in this book and that’s what you want from a zombie apocalypse novel. You want to feel the panic, the mayhem, to taste the fear as people the world over are suddenly running for their lives. Add to that, Ryder and her team of marines suited up in mech-suits cutting a swath through the undead horde. Yes, this book ticks the boxes for a gung-ho fix. But, there is so much more, to both the story and the starship captain. You want strong female characters? You have them, and not just the main character. There are others, the book gives us the points of view of several different characters which allows us to see the impact of the virus through eyes other than the heroes of the plot.

What I really liked about Ryder was the depth to her character and personality. Yes she is an all action hero, a member of the first families, a starship captain… pretty much the saviour of mankind. But she has a human side. We can see how the death and devastation affects her. She can stand shoulder to shoulder with her hard-faced marines. Fight, drink and curse with the best of them, but when she’s alone, she’s not afraid to shed a tear, to lament her own loss and that of the world.

Lazarus Code A First Family Saga eBook Sharon Van Orman Reviews

So different than you think. It really isn't a zombie novel, which is what almost prevented me from reading it. Ryder is an amazing, strong female character hell-bent on protecting her planet when it is almost destroyed by the outbreak of "weepers". The dialogue switches between main characters offering a lot of diverse outlooks, but like Van Orman's other works—it's the strong, yet still feminine, women where the story shines. The plot is really good, complex but not overly so, and the story envelops you. It's really very unique the way she approaches space travel, the future of humanity, society, science, and aristocracy and diplomacy. It seems so plausible even if currently out of our reach.

My only critique is in the first few chapters it feels a bit forced, putting character details too quickly at the reader. The flashbacks/current time shifts sometimes leave you reversing pages to try and make sense of it. But once it settles in, you're taken away.

Read away fellow syfy lovers, you'll be happy you did!
Disclaimer I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was amazing. To be honest, I sat down to write my review shortly after finishing it, started typing, then decided that the book was so full of depth that I needed a second read-through to really give a well-rounded opinion. This book got read twice, back-to-back, because it was that good.

There are many character levels to this book that switch seamlessly between first and third, depending on the character. Each offers a different level of the current storyline or the backstory.

This book crosses genres - it's post-apocalyptic, true, but it's also delving fairly far into the hard science fiction realm, too. The level of detail and believability to the way in which things happen, the way things work...there are no other words for it.

I've said in other reviews and I'll say it again World-building is difficult. Sharon Van Orman wins at world-building, even if it is building the broken world of an Earth gone crazy. She's even beautifully and smartly built the future of space exploration.

And this is the first in a series. Some books I've read will leave a cliff-hanger out in the middle of nowhere. The book just ends. No tying up loose ends. No closure. Just BAM! An ending. Sharon Van Orman's first book in the First Family Saga does not do this. This book's ending is quite the opposite. She ties things up nicely, but she leaves just enough up in the air that you want to keep reading. There's a fine line sometimes, but she does it brilliantly.

This book is definitely strongly in my top ten for 2015. If you like science fiction, speculative fiction, or just plain phenomenal books, you cannot go wrong with Lazarus Code.
Very fun read. Enjoyed it a lot.
This is a great combination of zombies and space opera. Wasn't sure how that would mix but it did very well. Action from start to finish. Can't wait for next book.
Would highly recommend a new editor. Quite a few missing words or wrong tenses or problems with plurals. Probably should have given 4 stars but I gave 5 for the story.
