I noticed that on Amazon, authors don't review their own books. I can see why. They don't want to gloat and talk about how amazing their books are or come off as arrogant. No one likes arrogant people. Even arrogant people don't like arrogant people. Truth. But honestly, you guys, this is the best first book I've ever written. I mean that. Even though I have not written any other first books, this one is much, much better than those because 1) it's written and 2) it's the best. This is an iron clad argument.

When my mother read this book, she read half of it (the first half) and got angry (which means it is a good book) and then got angry at my brother for allowing me to write this thing (again, to be clear, this is a good book). My brother wondered how any of this book was his fault. The dirty dishes in the sink are definitely his fault, but this book is not. The book is actually my fault, though I hate to point any fingers. When my mother read the rest of the book (the second half), she was all, ohhhh, I get it. She figured it all out. She realized that I, in fact, love her dearly even though she can be the biggest pain in the ass. My father LOVED this book (because it is the best) and told my mother "Maybe if you were nicer to Annie, she wouldn't have written a book about you." My father is a wise man. He is also a pain in the ass. So in that sense, my mother and father have a lot in common. When my brother read the book he said, "It's OK." Note that this is the highest praise my brother gives across the board. There's "sucks," "I hate it," "This is a mistake," "This should be taken to the streets and tortured in a public forum," and "It's OK." Mike says this book "is OK." For that reason alone, I consider this book a grand achievement. It really is the best first book I've ever written.

The best second book I've ever written is due out July 2013. My mother asked me what the title was, and I said "It's called Shut Up, You're Welcome and she said, "Oh Annie, that's just so rude." Her voice was heavy with disappointment. I said it took me about three years to write it, and she thought that in three years I probably could've found a better title that wasn't so impolite and I said "Did you miss the part where I said 'You're Welcome'?" My brother read the manuscript and said "Yeah, I went through it. It's OK." As you can see, my family is very proud of me and supportive and highly recommends my books.

Happy Birthday or Whatever Track Suits Kim Chee and Other Family Disasters Annie Choi 9780061132223 Books Reviews

After sitting in my book case for a month or so i finally decided to crack it open. I'm sure glad I did! It made me realize how hilariously different yet how similar her Korean family is to my family! This book had me cracking up at 1am. From the embarassing things her family does or the way her brother really cared for her yet pretended at times to be indifferent. It makes you feel like your family not so crazy and there are other families out there just as hilariously obnoxious as your own. Great read!
Let me preface this by saying that unlike the author, I am not Korean-American, and none of my relatives immigrated to the USA from Asia. However, as a first-generation American on one side of my family, I found myself laughing out-loud, relating to many of the stories and different memories included in this book. So many of the things the author's mother said and did reminded me of the things my own family would say and do....I also found myself relating many times with the author, at her occasional frustration/ sarcasm at being an American girl while also trying to balance the 'old-country' traditions, customs and influence of her parents and extended family. I'd give specific examples of what I found particularly relatable and funny, but I don't want to spoil the book for anyone interested. I will say, it was a QUICK read - I tried to make it "last" by reading it only on my lunch-break at work, so it took me a little over a week to finish it... but if I'd sat down to read it in one go, it'd probably only take 4 hours or so, at most. Still - a funny book, and well worth the read.
I have a Korean mother, and an American father. I was raised in as much of the Korean tradition as possible, and often thought my mother was out of her mind. Having American friends, I would see how their families and mothers were and thought that my mom was just neurotic and out to make my life miserable.

Annie's book is so well written. I felt that I could relate to everything she wrote. By reliving vicariously through her words, I was finally able to see that my family dynamic was not about control and disappointment, rather more about love and wanting the best for me, albeit in a very strange, stressful, mind game sort of way.

Annie says on page 196 "Though we hate to admit it, we care what our family thinks; we've been brainwashed to seek approval and obey, just like the rest of Korea's children." I've repeated this line again and again, and not one of my Korean friends (and siblings) haven't laughed out loud at the funny, but very true statement.

You will fall in love with Annie's family. You will adore her mother. You will feel like you know her in some strange way. This is probably because her spoken English is written as is, and you feel like she is talking to you. If you have a Korean parent, you will laugh at how the English language is somewhat butchered, yet that you are able to read and understand every bit of broken English, mispronounced and incomplete words. You will laugh at the different logic that cultural differences bring, and you will find yourself in stitches over the similarities that seem to be universal in the Korean family dynamic.

This book is a joy to read. It is side splitting funny, and not dull for one second. You'll start reading and not put it down. Then you will go through withdrawal when you are finished. You'll find yourself ordering copies for friends of similar backgrounds, and referring to over and over again.

Annie is comical and quick witted. I only hope that she will continue her memoir into the future.
